Home Grown | Ryan Roche
Anna Palma
Ryan Roche lives in stone farmhouse in upstate New York. She is married with three children. She has chickens, goats and a vegetable patch. For the past nine years she has designed a children’s line called Mor Mor Rita, whose biggest fan may be her friendMaggie Gyllenhaal. (When she and her husband, Peter Sarsgaard, got married, their daughter Ramona wore a dress by Roche.) “She has so much style and her finger on a particular elegance you don’t see anywhere else,” Gyllenhaal says. “I kept thinking to myself, I wish she could do this for adults.”
Now Gyllenhaal — and many other Roche fans — are getting their wish. For fall 2011, the 33-year-old designer has introduced a a full-fledged woman’s collection under her home name. Moms will recognize the delicate fabrics and poetic details, including organic cotton and knit pieces in airy colors of wheat, blush, hot pinks and cobalt blues — the kind of colors she finds blanketed on her goats and flower beds. What’s new are pieces like an ivory silk jumper, wool crocheted market bag and looser silhouettes of apricot-colored hand-knit cashmere sweater tops, bright red crocheted festival dresses and shawls and scarves. Everything is made in Long Island City, Queens and a cooperative of widows in Nepal. “There is a story behind the clothing,” Roche says. “That is so important to me.”
